Description

The story of the Catlins River Branch Railway 1879 – 1971.

The colourful past of the Catlins River Branch Railway in Southland has always been a source of interest for many. The difficulties of terrain, climate and economics resulted in its construction being spread over a period of 36 years. Written accounts and photographs emphasise the endurance of the men who without the aid of modern machinery, worked under trying conditions to create the tunnel, cuttings and embankments which remain their monument.
